Step1

Step1

Step 1

Put a whipping on the Multi-plait about 12 x the diameter of the rope from the end.

Use a basic overhand knot one side and a reef knot on the other and cut off the ends.

Finish off with a drop of super glue to prevent the reef knot from undoing.

Step2

Step2

Step 2

Break the heat sealed ends with a Swedish Fid.

It is better to break the heat seal, than cut the rope as the heat seal stops the ends from fraying.

Step3

Step3

Step 3

You will notice that 2 pairs are twisted clockwise and the other 2 pairs are twisted anti-clockwise.

Unravel the pairs down to the whipping twine.

Then taking the clockwise pairs, one at a time, unravel the twist in the pairs and tape up at their ends using one colour tape. (We've used Blue)

Do the same with the anti-clockwise pairs, but use a different colour tape. (We've used Yellow)

You should end up as in the image.

Step4

Step4

Step 4

Form the eye, laying one pair of Blue and one pair of Yellow on the lower side (closest to the ground in the picture), and the other Blue and Yellow pairs on the upper side. (closest to you in the picture)

Now to start Splicing. The first two tucks use the blue and yellow pair on the upper side.

Tuck the blue pair (closest to the eye) under the closest pair in the rope.

Then tuck the yellow pair (furtherest from the eye) under the next pair down in the rope.

The picture shows the yellow pair being tucked.

Step5

Step 5

Turn rope over 180 degrees to tuck third and fourth pairs.

Tuck the yellow pair (closest to the eye) under the closest pair in the rope.

Then tuck the blue pair (furtherest from the eye) under the next pair down in the rope. (See image).

Step6

Step6

Step 6

Once Four pairs have been tucked once, it should look like the image.

Now it is simply a matter of plaiting the strands following the natural path under the next pair down in the rope.

Step7

Step7

Step 7

Looking at the splice from underneath, the pair that are closest to the eye (in this case the Blue pair on the right), run them along their natural course, and tuck them under the first pair they come to.

Step8

Step8

Step 8

Next pair down from the eye (Yellow on the left), run them along their natural course, and tuck them under the pair they come to, as viewed in the image.

The third pair down from the eye (Yellow on the right), run them along their natural course and tuck them under the pair they come to. (there is no image showing this third pair being tucked)

Step9

Step9

Step 9

The final and fourth pair in this sequence (blue on the left), run them along their natural course and tuck them under the pair they come to.

Step10

Step10

Step 10

This image shows the completed second set of tucks.

Now turn the splice/eye over 180 degrees and do exactly the same as Steps 7 - 9 a further three times.

Total of five sequences of tucks, remembering to turn 180 degrees after each sequence.

Step11

Step11

Step 11

Now take the tape off all strands.

Twist each pair together with the lay and tape up at the base of the strands using electrical tape the same colour as the rope.

Cut each pair in the centre of the tape.

Step12

Step12

Step 12

Super glue the ends and edges of the tape to prevent unravelling.
